How Much Does Social Media Management Cost, and What Should the Price Include?

There is no single price for social media management: the cost depends on the channels, volume and complexity of content, shoots, audience communication and reporting. To compare proposals, separate the agency fee, content production, advertising management and ad spend. This article does not provide a price range because we do not have a verified price list or comparable proposals on which to base one. Instead, we outline the items you can use to check what you are getting and the total cost of the proposed plan.

What Are You Actually Paying for with Social Media Management?

A published photograph or video may involve research, planning, writing, production, approval and analysis. The number of posts alone is therefore not enough to assess the price.

A proposal should clearly show which activities are included in the package, which are charged separately and which remain your team’s responsibility. In particular, distinguish the following four categories.

The Agency’s Social Media Management Fee

This fee may cover content planning, coordination, calendar preparation, copywriting, publishing, audience communication and reporting. The exact scope should be stated in the proposal.

Check whether it includes an initial assessment and strategy or whether these are commissioned separately. Also clarify whether “management” means simply publishing supplied materials or developing concepts and creating content.

Content Production

Production covers the creation of materials: photography, filming, design, animation and editing. It may be included in the fee or charged separately.

Ask for a description of specific deliverables. “One shoot” is not precise enough without its duration, location, preparation requirements and the agreed number of edited assets. The overview of photography and video production services can help you identify the production tasks to include in your enquiry.

Advertising Management

This covers the work involved in preparing, setting up, monitoring and adjusting paid campaigns. It may include a testing plan, audience selection and results analysis.

Check whether ad creation, necessary visual adaptations and measurement setup are included. Also ask how the fee is calculated and what happens when the number of campaigns or markets increases.

Ad Spend

Ad spend is the amount allocated to paid advertising placements on the platforms. Separate it from the fee for the agency’s work.

The proposal should state the planned amount, who pays it and how changes are approved. If one proposal includes ad spend in its total while another lists it separately, their headline prices are not directly comparable.

What Has the Greatest Impact on the Price?

The Number of Channels and Required Adaptations

Managing an additional channel may require different topics, copy, formats and communication. Ask whether the price includes tailored content for each channel or publishing the same material across several profiles.

If you are just establishing a consistent workflow, consider fewer channels that you can support well. Expanding makes sense when the additional channel has a clear role and sufficient resources.

Content Formats and Complexity

A photograph with copy, a series of related visuals and an edited video involve different tasks. Scripting, graphics, subtitles, animation, audio editing and versions for different uses all affect the scope of work.

Agree on what counts as one post. Is a video published on two channels one content asset or two deliverables? How many slides are included in a carousel? These definitions make comparisons easier.

Shoots and Available Materials

The cost also depends on whether you supply usable materials or they need to be created. Clarify locations, travel, equipment, participants, product preparation and responsibility for organising the shoot.

If you create materials in-house, agree on technical and content guidelines. Savings are useful when your team can meet the quality standards and deadlines required to carry out the plan.

Moderation and Responding to Users

Moderation involves monitoring comments and acting according to agreed guidelines, while responding to messages may require additional information from sales or customer support.

Specify the expected volume of communication, working hours, response times and complaints process. Support at weekends, during events or in sensitive situations should be clarified separately.

Reporting and Coordination

Check whether you receive a data summary alone or also interpretation, recommendations and a discussion of next steps. Specify meeting frequency, revision rounds and approval deadlines.

The article “5 Key Areas for Increasing Social Media Engagement” can also help you plan communication. When comparing prices, however, ask for a specific description of the work that will support your goals.

A Table for Comparing Proposals

Copy this table for each agency and complete it using the information in its proposal. Mark unclear items as “clarification needed”.

ItemWhat the Proposal Should Specify
Initial assessment and strategyScope, deliverable and one-off cost, if charged separately.
ChannelsList of profiles and level of content adaptation.
ContentNumber and type of deliverables, plus the definition of one post.
ProductionShoots, locations, preparation, editing and final assets.
Management and publishingPlanning, copywriting, uploading, checking and publishing.
Audience communicationVolume, working hours and escalation of complex enquiries.
Advertising managementCampaign scope, fee calculation and included adaptations.
Ad spendSeparate amount, payer and spending approval rules.
ReportingMetrics, frequency, interpretation and meetings.
Revisions and additional workIncluded revision rounds and approval of additional charges.
Rights and accessAccount control, usage rights and file handover.
Terms and total costDuration, notice period, payment arrangements and VAT.

Use the following calculation:

Total planned cost = management fee + separately charged production + advertising management fee + ad spend + other agreed costs.

If an item is already included in the package, do not count it again. Show one-off costs separately and compare proposals over the same period.

How Do You Choose the Right Scope for Your Budget?

Start with your goal and what you can handle internally. If you have quality materials and someone who responds to users, you may only need support with planning, editing and publishing.

If you lack materials, time and a designated person, a package without production and coordination may leave important tasks uncovered.

Hypothetical example: a small shop compares two proposals. The first includes publishing photographs supplied by the shop, while the second also includes product shoots, short videos and responses to messages. Before comparing the total price, the shop needs to assess whether it can consistently handle the tasks excluded from the first proposal.

With a limited budget, reduce the scope according to your priorities: the number of channels, complexity of formats or frequency of production. If you only need one shoot or an occasional campaign, a standalone project may be more suitable than an ongoing monthly package.

Which Mistakes Should You Avoid?

Do not choose solely on the basis of cost per post. That calculation overlooks planning, production, communication and analysis.

Also avoid comparing packages with different scopes or assuming that advertising is included in every fee. Ask for clarification of vague terms such as “complete management” or “unlimited revisions”.

Before deciding, check your own responsibilities. Delays in supplying materials and approvals can make delivery harder even when the agency’s role is well defined.

Additional Questions

Can We Agree on a Trial Period First?

You can propose one with a clear scope and evaluation criteria. It can show how communication and delivery work, but it may not be sufficient to assess long-term business impact.

What Happens If We Do Not Use All the Agreed Posts?

Check whether they carry over, can be replaced with another task or whether unused capacity expires. Do not assume that all providers follow the same rules.

How Are Busier Seasonal Periods Charged?

Agree on them in advance through a temporary increase in scope or a separate project. Specify the additional production, communication and advertising you expect.

Does a Larger Budget Guarantee Better Results?

A larger budget allows for a broader scope of work or distribution, but it does not guarantee results on its own. Performance also depends on your offering, audience, quality of execution and how incoming enquiries are handled.
